By correctly adjusting the default encoding setting, your contacts can receive your email without any missing or substituted characters, for example, in languages such as Chinese, Arabic and Russian.

You might need to change your account settings to guarantee full support of the specific character set you're using.

Reasons to change the default encoding

You might need to change the default encoding because some languages have more varied and extensive alphabets than others. These languages might require a different character encoding to make sure all of its characters are available. For example, with the Russian language, you must select Cyrillic (Windows) as this is commonly used in Russian to display characters like ะ› and ะ”, and many more.

Depending on what language or languages you want to send your emails in, you must check to make sure you know of any special requirements that require a change to the default encoding setting.

Changing the default encoding

Only change the default encoding if you are absolutely sure you must do so.

Change the default encoding

To find the default encoding function:

  1. Expand the User menu, then go to Settings > General > Account settings.

  2. Under the heading Localisation, you can find the Default encoding drop-down menu.
