Get started with transactional email

Learn the basics about creating, designing, and viewing the reporting of transactional email.


Transactional email is non-marketing, administrative email that you send out to individual contacts based on an interaction they have had with you or an action they have taken. Examples include order confirmations and password reset emails.

Before you start

Things you need to know:

  • Transactional emails must not contain any marketing content.
  • You need to ensure that transactional email is enabled on your account.

Create and design transactional emails

You can create and design your transactional emails using EasyEditor, meaning that you can make the most of its design features to brand your emails exactly as you like. Just make sure that any campaign you want to send as transactional email is set up as a triggered campaign.

You can also personalise these emails using transactional email's own personalisation functionality (not to be confused with EasyEditor's personalisation functionality!).

Send transactional emails

Our transactional email feature allows you to send using one of two methods:

  • SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
  • our API (Application Programming Interface)

To send a transactional email using either one of these methods, you need to create user credentials for them, which can be done within Dotdigital. You might need the help of a developer to get up and running with sending transactional email.

Once you have chosen your sending method and set up your credentials, you can send your transactional email templates by including the campaign ID in your code. The ID for a campaign can be found by opening the campaign in EasyEditor and looking at the URL:


Transactional email reports

To find the reporting for transactional emails, go to Analytics > Channel analytics > Dashboards: Transactional email. You can filter on successful and unsuccessful sends, search for sends to specific contacts and see open, click, and bounce tracking.
