The WooCommerce connector allows you to enrol logged in customers or guests into an abandoned cart program to send follow-up messages to encourage them to complete their purchase.

For logged-in customers:

  • Shopper logs into their account ➔ Adds items to their cart ➔ Abandons

    or

  • Shopper adds items to their cart ➔ Logs into their account ➔ Updates their cart ➔ Abandons

For guests:

  • Adds items to their cart ➔ Signs up to newsletter ➔ Abandons

    or

  • Adds items to their cart ➔ Enters an email address during checkout ➔ Abandons

    or

  • Clicks through an email campaign ➔ Adds items to their cart ➔ Abandons

At this point, the cart details are stored as a record in that contact's CartInsight data collection. This CartInsight data includes items such as the URL of the cart, the products in the cart and the price of the cart.

The abandoned cart feature is quick to set up and intuitive, and you don't need to add any custom code to your store. You need to build a program and map that program from the settings of the connector.

You have complete control over your program and can decide how many campaigns should be sent, and when, and the content within those campaigns. Cart contents are easily inserted into the campaign by using the abandoned cart block. Enrolment can happen as soon as 30 minutes after the cart has been abandoned.

Before you start

Things you need to know:

  • To use the latest WooCommerce Abandoned Cart functionality you must be on Dotdigital for WooCommerce version 1.3 or later.
To check your version, in Wordpress, go to Admin > Plugins > Installed Plugins.

  • You must first have set up the Dotdigital Tag in WooCommerce.
Learn how in Enable the Dotdigital Tag for WooCommerce.

  • Abandoned cart relies on web behavior tracking to trigger and import cartInsight data. When adding products to a cart for testing, you must refresh the page or browse to another page for web behavior tracking to trigger, otherwise your cart might appear empty and not trigger abandoned cart program enrolment.

1. Create an abandoned cart email

An abandoned cart email contains the latest contents of a contact's cart in a pre-built layout, which is populated with CartInsight data. Abandoned cart emails must be created as a triggered email in Dotdigital.

Preview the content of an abandoned cart block

You can preview the text displayed to a contact when the email is sent by using the personalised preview.

  1. In the EasyEditor design view of your abandoned cart campaign, select PREVIEW.

  2. Select the Personalisation icon.

  3. Enter the email address of a contact that has a CartInsight data record.

To find out which contacts have a CartInsight data record, you can create a segment that contains those contacts. Learn more in Use Insight data for segmentation.

If you need additional help with building an email campaign, read the Email basics section of the Help Centre.

2. Create an abandoned cart program

Contacts are enrolled into an abandoned cart program when they abandon items in their shopping cart while browsing your site. You must create and activate an abandoned cart program.

If you’re new to program building, review the Program builder section of the Help Centre.

3. Activate the abandoned cart process

  1. In Dotdigital, go to Connect > Connect website.

  2. For the Dotdigital Tag profile you created for your store, select the Edit icon.

  3. Under Abandoned cart, expand the Enrol abandoned carts to drop-down menu and select your abandoned cart program.

  4. Expand the Enrol abandoned sessions after drop-down menu and select the delay period you want.
This is the amount of time between the cart being abandoned, and the contact being enrolled in the program.

  5. Optionally, under Advanced settings, select the Enable guest carts switch to set the status to Yes.
If enabled, contacts are created for abandoned carts if they don’t already exist. You must ensure your website clearly captures the necessary consent for these contacts to receive marketing communications.

  6. Select SAVE.

Reminder

The abandoned cart program must be activated for enrolment to begin.
