Import contacts into Dotdigital using a CSV file and choose how to update existing data. You can overwrite fields, update specific values, or work with suppressed contacts to keep your data accurate and up to date.

Before you start

Things you need to know:

  • Your CSV file must include the Email column as a unique identifier.

  • You can only update certain fields for suppressed contacts.

Import contacts and overwrite data

  1. Go to Audience > Contacts.

  2. Expand the NEW CONTACT drop-down menu and select Import contacts.

    • For File, select Choose file and select your contact list.

    • Enter an Email address to notify.

    • Expand the Encoding type drop-down menu and select your encoding type.

  3. Select UPLOAD.

  4. Select CHANGE SETTINGS, then under Data field options expand the drop-down menu and select Update all data fields.

  5. Select APPLY, then select FINISH to complete the import.

Update specific fields for existing contacts

  1. Prepare your CSV file with only the columns you want to update, such as Email and Discount code.

  2. Go to Audience > Contacts.

  3. Expand the NEW CONTACT drop-down menu and select Import contacts.

    • For File, select Choose file and select your contact list.

    • Enter an Email address to notify.

    • Expand the Encoding type drop-down menu and select your encoding type.

  4. Select UPLOAD.

  5. Map the Email column to the email identifier.

  6. Map other columns to the correct data fields.

  7. Select FINISH to update the data.

Update data for suppressed contacts

  • You can't update email addresses for suppressed contacts. You must change these directly in the app.

  • You can update other fields, such as First name, Last name, or custom fields using the API or during import.
