When you publish a popup using the Dotdigital Tag, you can preview, test, and refine it on your website before setting it live.

Before you start

Things you need to know:

  • Your Dotdigital Tag settings must include at least one specified domain for the preview option to be available, and for popups to correctly display on your site. You must also ensure that Enable popup publishing is set to Yes.

  • The preview is displayed on the website homepage only. Any URL rules you apply for the published popup don’t apply to the preview.

The preview does respect any display rules or triggers you set.

Preview your survey, page or form popup

If you have set a display rule to show the popup again if dismissed with a delay of, for example, 1 day, the preview follows this rule. This means if you dismiss the previewed popup, then want to preview again using the same device and browser, you must wait for one day to pass.

To bypass this, you can use an incognito window to generate a new preview straight away.

Once you have designed your survey, page, or form and are ready to publish, you must first generate the popup code.

Follow the steps in the article linked above to set your triggers and display rules, then:

  1. Select Go live on your website instantly.

  2. Expand the Website name drop-down menu and select the name of the website you want to publish to.
This is the profile name you added when you configured the Dotdigital Tag for your site.

  3. Expand the Shows drop-down menu and select from:

    • On all pages
Displays the popup on every page of your site, according to the display settings you’ve applied.

    • Based on URL rule
Expand the operator drop-down menus to set your page criteria.
Any URL rules you set apply to the published popup, but do not apply to the preview.

  4. Select PREVIEW POPUP.

If your instance of the Dotdigital Tag includes multiple domains, select the domain you want to preview on.

You see the popup displayed on the homepage of your chosen website domain. A blue Preview mode banner at the top of the screen indicates that the popup is not yet fully live.

If you have set a delay or other display rules or specific triggers, the preview follows these criteria.

The preview is fully functional, so you can test responses if you want to. Any response you submit displays in the survey report and triggers any email messages, program enrolments, or list memberships you have configured.

When you preview your popup, we generate a temporary link for you. This link expires after 24 hours. If you want to preview the popup again after this, you can return to the page editor and select PREVIEW POPUP again to generate a new temporary link.

Edit your popup

Once you’ve previewed your popup, you might want to make changes before setting it fully live.

You can return to EasyEditor and make any changes you want to the design of your page. You can also change any trigger or display settings for the popup itself.

When you’re happy with your changes, to preview again:

  1. Select PUBLISHED PAGE.

  2. Under Launch, select REPUBLISH.
This action doesn’t publish your popup, it just makes your changes available to the preview.

  3. Select GENERATE POPUP CODE, then select PREVIEW POPUP.

Alternatively, if you already have a valid preview URL, you can refresh this URL after republishing the page to preview your changes.
