Writing assistants such as Grammarly, Quillbot, LanguageTool, ProWritingAid, and similar tools attach themselves to editable text fields in your browser. When they run inside visual or HTML editors, they can inject their own HTML, CSS, or scripts while analysing your text.
This injected content may not be visible while editing, but can appear later in:
sent campaigns
the campaign source code
inbox rendering
This behaviour is not specific to Dotdigital and occurs because of how these browser extensions interact with web‑based editors.
Why this happens
Most writing and grammar browser extensions automatically activate on editable fields across the web. When they detect an editor, including drag‑and‑drop or HTML editors, they insert small snippets of HTML, CSS, or scripts while scanning for suggestions.
In EasyEditor, these injected elements can become part of the campaign content or source code. As a result, they may only surface after sending or when viewing the source, even though they were not visible during editing.
How writing extensions affect your campaign
You may notice one or more of the following:
Text, links, or comments referencing:
Grammarly or grammarly.com
LanguageTool
ProWritingAid
Quillbot
Unexpected formatting changes
Elements or comments that do not appear in EasyEditor
Hidden HTML or CSS elements added to text blocks
Troubleshoot
To prevent injected content, disable writing or grammar extensions while working in EasyEditor. Many extensions allow you to turn them off for a specific site.
Example based on Grammarly
Open your browser.
Select the Grammarly extension icon from the toolbar.
Toggle Check for writing suggestions for the current webpage to Off.
Grammarly remains enabled on other websites but does not run on Dotdigital pages.
Disable extensions in your browser
You can temporarily disable writing or grammar extensions entirely while working in Dotdigital.
Chrome: Right‑click the extension icon > Manage extension > toggle off
Edge: Menu > Extensions > toggle the extension off
Firefox: Menu > Add‑ons > Extensions > Disable the extension
You can re‑enable the extension after leaving Dotdigital.
Use an incognito or private window
Opening Dotdigital in an incognito or private window disables browser extensions by default and prevents them from running.
If injected content already exists
If a campaign already contains injected content:
Go to Utilities > Edit source, search for references to the extension, and remove the related code.
Restore a previous version using Utilities > Restore.
Create a new campaign after disabling writing extensions to ensure clean content.
