When you edit a template in your library, you don’t have to build each campaign from scratch or keep searching for your favourite design. Your customised templates stay accessible, so you can update content and links anytime.

Before you start

Things you need to know:

Edit a saved email template

  1. In Dotdigital, go to Content > Templates > Custom email templates.
This area is empty until you save your own templates.

  2. Hover over the template thumbnail and select Edit.

  3. The selected template opens in EasyEditor. Edit your template, and select SAVE & CONTINUE.

  4. Edit the plain text version of the template.

  5. When complete, select FINISH.

The edited template appears refreshed on your Custom email templates page, with an updated modification date beneath it.

Update links in templates and campaigns

When you update a link in a custom template, the change only applies to future campaigns created from that template. Campaigns that have already been created, scheduled, or added to automations aren’t linked dynamically to the template, so you need to update them manually.

To update links in live automations:

  1. Deactivate the program.

  2. Edit each campaign individually.

  3. Save changes and activate the program.

To update links in sent campaigns:

  1. In Dotdigital, go to Campaigns > Email > Sent.

  2. Select your campaign and go to Summary > HTML content.

  3. Select VIEW/EDIT and edit links that you want to update

  4. Select SAVE.

Always double-check links in scheduled and automated campaigns when updating templates to ensure consistency.

Not seeing the edit option?

To be able to edit a custom template, you must navigate to Content > Templates.

If you instead navigate to Campaigns > Email > New campaign > Custom templates tab you only see the option to preview a template, not to edit it.

The table below should help you identify when you are on the correct page to be able to edit a template.

Correct view

  • Page heading is Templates

  • Tab title is Custom email templates

  • Button text reads UPLOAD TEMPLATE

Incorrect view

  • Page heading is Choose a template

  • Tab title is Custom templates

  • Button text reads UPLOAD CAMPAIGN
