Program extensions: Google Ads

Overview

You can use a Google Ads channel extension in programs to automate adding new contacts to your Google Ads’ audiences. This helps you to maintain and grow your audiences easily and improve your retargeting efforts. With this extension, you can also create multiple profiles for a Google Ads channel, so you can connect to different Google Ads accounts.

Before you start

To use this extension:

  • You must have an Amplify or Custom package.
If you want to change your package, please contact your account manager.
  • You must have a minimum of 1000 contacts in an audience list before your adverts are activated. Further information can be found in Google's documentation.
  • You must create a program using our program builder.

Once you've created a channel profile, drag a Google Ads node into a program and pick which group of contacts are added to an audience. Keep in mind that this is a one-way synchronisation, meaning you can only add contacts to a Google Ads audience using this program node.

Create a Google Ads channel profile

To create your Google Ads channel profile:

  1. Select Settings > Channel management.
  2. Select Google Ads under the Channel column.
  3. Select New profile.
  4. Select Log in to Google and fill in your Google details.
  5. Select Allow.
  6. Select the Google account you want to use.
  7. Set the Status to Enabled.
  8. Select Save.

At this point, the Google Ads node is available in the program builder under Extensions in the side panel.

Using the Google Ads node in the program builder

After creating a Google Ads channel profile, the Google Ads node is now available in the program builder under Extensions in the side panel. Where you add the Google Ads node in a program’s flow is where your contacts are automatically added to the selected audience.

To create and configure a Google Ads node in the program builder:

  1. Select Extensions in the side panel of the program builder.
  2. Drag the Google Ads node into your program.
  3. Select the node to set it’s action.
  4. Select Select audience list to add contacts to the audience of your choice when they reach this node, or select + New audience.

You can find your newly create audience in Google Ads under Tools > Shared Library > Audience manager.

Change your Google Ads profile in the node

To change your Google Ads profile audience:

  1. Select the Google Ads node in the program builder you want to change.
  2. Select another profile in the drop-down next to the Profile field.
  3. Select Apply.

Change your Google Ads audience in the node

To change your Google Ads audience:

  1. Select the Google Ads node in the program builder you want to change.
  2. Select Change audience list.
  3. Choose a new audience.
  4. Select Apply.

Read node data

Once your program is activated, you can see how many contacts passed through the node and are now in your audience, if Google recognises your contacts. You can check this by going to the program builder and looking at the lower right-hand corner of your Google Ads node.

Information

The number of contacts synced could be greater than the number of contacts in your Google Ads audience. This is because Google compares a list of contacts with users they know about, so only the contacts that Google can match are in your audience.

View contact figures

To view your audience statistics, in Engagement Cloud, go to Settings > Channel management > Google Ads. The Contacts synced in the last 7 days column shows how many contacts have synced in the last seven days for each profile.

Drill down into contact figures

To drill down and see more contact details, select the numerical figure under the Contacts synced in the last 7 days column. On the Google Ads usage page, you can see how many contact syncs succeeded or failed, and if there are any warnings.

Information

All time statistics are stored for 100 days.

Adjust the date range

To adjust the date range to see a specific data set on the Google Ads usage page:

  1. Select the Date range button.
  2. Select the current date range (text that’s underlined).

  3. Choose if you want to see a predefined or custom date range - set it however you want.
  4. Select Apply to save the date range you selected.
  5. Select Apply again.

Searching through synced contacts

To view a searchable list of synced contacts and the time they joined your audience, under the Contacts synced column, select the numerical figure. The Contacts panel slides in from the right. To search by email address, use the by email search bar or select the Time synced heading to sort the syncs by latest or oldest.

Delete or disable a Google Ads profile

You can delete or disable a Google Ads profile. Before doing this, please note:

  • You can't delete or disable a profile that's in use in an active program.
  • Deleting a profile deletes all usage statistics for that profile.
  • Disabling a profile stops your team members from selecting the profile in a Google Ads node until you enable the profile again.

Delete a Google Ads profile

To delete a Google Ads profile, in Engagement Cloud:

1. Go to Settings > Channel management > Google Ads.
2. Select the checkbox next to the name of the profile you want to delete.
3. Select Delete.

Choose what data gets synced

To be selective about what data gets synced with your social media, for example, only consenting contacts, then you can do this with data fields.

If you store consent as a data field, you can check for the data field before pushing data to Facebook or Google. To do this, you can use a decision node to filter by data field, preference, or segment depending on your needs.

Disable a Google Ads profile

To disable a Google Ads profile, in Engagement Cloud:

1. Go to Settings > Channel management > Google Ads.
2. Select the name of the profile you want to disable.
3. Select Disabled next to the Status field.
4. Select Save.
