Advanced usage

You can view and edit the HTML for a block by selecting the block and then clicking on the HTML button in the toolbar.

Alternatively, you can edit the entire document's source by clicking on the Utilities menu and selecting Edit source. See Edit source for more information.

Edit HTML for a block

Clicking on the HTML button will produce an editing side panel.

Remember that not all email clients will interpret HTML in the same way, so be careful when editing that you're using appropriate markup.

Once you're done editing, click Apply to confirm your changes, or Cancel to exit without confirming.

Edit source

When editing the source for the entire HTML document, you can update any part of the campaign, including the <!DOCTYPE>, <head> and <body>.

But be careful with what you edit because you could break some aspects of EasyEditor itself if you edit or remove the wrong thing!

Whilst editing the source, you can use the toolbar to do the following:

  • Return to the design view
Click on Edit design to exit the HTML source view and return to EasyEditor's normal view.
  • Insert a link
Upon clicking Insert, the link will be inserted at the current cursor position.
  • Insert a data field
Click on a contact data field to insert it into your HTML code.
  • Insert an image
When inserted, you may need to add width and/or height attributes as these work better in some older email clients and stop the image from breaking the layout of your campaign.

Find and replace text

The standard browser text 'find' operations don't work particularly well in the code editor for various reasons. However, there is a powerful text search feature built in that should allow you to do most things relatively easily:

  • Ctrl-F
    Start searching
  • Ctrl-G
    Find next
  • Shift-Ctrl-G
    Find previous
  • Shift-Ctrl-F
  • Shift-Ctrl-R
    Replace all

Use Cmd instead of Ctrl if you are using a Mac.

Advanced usage

If you'd rather use the HTML source editor than EasyEditor itself, simply add <!-- eehtmlonly --> to the top of the <body> part of your email, and then save. Next time you reload the campaign, it will automatically load in the HTML editor.

Simply remove this code if you want to return to using EasyEditor again.

For help with editing EasyEditor HTML, see our EasyEditor template markup section.

Does Dotmailer have the capacity to support other common fonts (such as Calibri), or will it make a substitution when it comes to saving? Same question with editing font height (stretch) and strength (Bold, semi bold etc.)

    Many Thanks.

    Hi Beth,

If you're editing the HTML, you can put in fonts like Calibri and dotMailer will support them as long as your computer does; however that doesn't mean that your contacts' devices will show the font. Calibri isn't widely available on Macs so the email won't look the same when viewed on other devices. Its often best to stick to the fonts currently available as standard in dotMailer (the most common 'web safe' fonts), that way you can design safe in the knowledge that it will look great in all common email clients.

If you do want to use Calibri, or another non-standard font, it's advisable to check your reports to see what devices your contacts use and whether they're likely to have those fonts installed.

Assuming you do want to use it, it's wise to add some fall-back fonts e.g:

    <font style="font-family: Calibri, Tahoma, Helvetica, Sans-Serif;">

And make sure you use the Inbox Preview tool or test sends to see how it looks in your contacts' most common email clients/devices.

In one of my landing pages (HTML code used), even though there's no 'addressbookid' attached, a record is created in Salesforce linking to one of the addressbooks. Another landing page has been created with same code but added addressbookid this time. Still the record is being created in Salesforce linking with older address book. Could you please explain why its happening.

Hi Lokesh. Thanks for your query. I'd probably need to understand more details around your exact set up here to help you further. With that in mind, I've converted this into a support ticket for you. This will prove the best route to getting the advice you need from our support team.

You'll get the details in your inbox shortly (and any further useful details you can think of to add to the ticket would be great), and someone from the team will be in touch not long after that.
