Product recommendations use your ecommerce data to decide which products to display. By default, they use variants, but you can change this behaviour to recommend parent products instead. If needed, you can also create custom rules for cases where variants require special handling..
Recommend parents
Before you start
To use this setting to recommend parents your ecommerce connector must be up to date.
Magento 1 requires version 6.4.23 or later;
Magento 2 requires version 4.3.0 or later.
You must also sync your product catalogue.
Example scenario
Product recommendations treat a unique URL as a unique product. If your store's variants are set up to have their own URL, it is possible that your recommendations contain size variants of a product. In this case, you may prefer to recommend the parent.
Configure to recommend parents
Go to Content > Products > Catalogs.
Select the properties icon for the catalog.
Under product recommendation settings, select SELECT to configure the catalog rules.
In the Edit store rules side panel, under Group products by the selected fields, select Recommend group 'url', which is the default rule.
In the variant rules side panel, select Recommend parents.
Select APPLY in each of the three open side panels to close them and save your settings.
Once you have made these changes, it automatically regenerates your product recommendations.
Recommend variants with custom rules
Example scenario
If your variants cannot be linked to a parent product, or if you want to identify unique products using a field other than URL, you can create custom variant rules.
Custom rules should only be used as a last resort. Contact the Support team first to confirm whether another approach is possible.
Configure to recommend variants with custom rules
Go to Content > Products > Catalogs.
Select the properties icon for the catalog.
Under Product recommendation settings, select SELECT to configure the catalog rules.
In the Edit store rules side panel, under Group products by the selected fields, select Recommend group 'url', which is the default rule.
In the Variant rules side panel, variant handling should be set to Use custom variant groups.
The default option for Group products by should be URL, which you can change to another field, for example, SKU or Name.
