The connector allows you to enrol your contacts with abandoned carts into a Dotdigital program, enabling you to execute an omnichannel strategy, or send an abandoned cart email series to both your customers and guests from your website.
Before you start
Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce abandoned cart
This abandoned cart article is for our Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce connector only, the information in this article does not apply to other implementations of abandoned cart.
If you want to use abandoned cart with Shopify or in a custom implementation, then please read the abandoned cart sections on our Help Centre:
If you are unsure which implementation you need to use, check out the article Which abandoned carts/abandoned checkout implementation do you need?
Things you need to know:
Whilst it's possible to run an abandoned cart program and the email series alongside each other, it's likely that you'll want to avoid this duplication. In which case, remember to disable any abandoned cart email series that you might already have running when enabling an abandoned cart program.
If you only sync subscribed contacts to your account and then allow abandoned cart sends for non-subscribed contacts, this creates contacts in your account anyway, even if they aren't opted in. However, the contacts won't be added to a list.
Enable an abandoned cart program
An abandoned cart program enrols logged in users, guests, and guest subscribers.
CartInsight (Dotdigital's version of Insight data for abandoned carts) gets stored against a contact in Dotdigital when they abandon their basket. CartInsight is then used to power the abandoned cart block in a campaign, allowing you to preview the abandoned cart block's content in EasyEditor.
To enable an abandoned cart program:
Create the abandoned cart program you wish to implement within your Dotdigital account.
Learn how in Create an abandoned cart program.
In your store account, go to Stores > Configuration > DOTDIGITAL > Abandoned Carts and find the heading Abandoned Cart Program.
Expand the Enrol abandoned cart to drop-down menu and choose the program you created
Only programs in an active state are listed.
Expand the Enrol abandoned cart after drop-down menu and choose the time period for enrolment after a cart is abandoned.
How the abandoned cart email series works
Each type of site visitor - customers and guests - can receive three different emails scheduled for different times, each with different email content.
You have two options which provide the ability to include the contents of visitors cart within the emails you send:
Using Dotdigital's Abandoned cart block
This can be dragged and dropped into a campaign using EasyEditor (and makes use of CartInsight to populate the block)Using Dotdigital's external dynamic content
To find the external dynamic content URL for abandoned carts, go to Stores > Configuration > DOTDIGITAL > Dynamic Content > External Dynamic URLs.
Our abandoned carts functionality works through an analysis every five minutes of quotes in the core quotes table. In this table, your visitor's last modified date is within the time settings you have set and contains an email address or one associated to a registered customer.
This functionality does not work if you are not using the default quote functionality.
We allow you to set up to three emails to be automatically sent when a cart is abandoned, and you are also allowed to set up different emails for customers and guests. In addition to this, as per all of our features, you can configure different settings per website.
Enable abandoned cart emails
Create the campaigns you wish to send as abandoned cart emails within your Dotdigital account.
Learn how in Create an abandoned cart email.
Go to Stores > Configuration > DOTDIGITAL > Abandoned Carts, and find the headings Customers Email Series and Guests Email Series.
Decide whether you are setting the abandoned cart emails for customers or guests, and how many emails you require.
Expand the Enabled\Disabled drop-down menu and select Enable.
Expand the Send After (min) drop-down menu and choose the amount of time you want to elapse after the cart has been abandoned before the email is sent.
Expand the Campaign to Send drop-down menu and choose the abandoned cart email you created in Dotdigital.
Select Save Config in the top right. A message appears to confirm that the settings have been saved. Your abandoned cart emails will send accordingly.
Adjust abandoned carts email limit
You can restrict the sending of an abandoned cart email to a contact if they've already received a previous one within a set amount of hours. This avoids overloading contacts' inboxes if they do tend to have a habit of regularly abandoning their carts.
To adjust the abandoned carts email limit:
Go to Stores > Configuration > DOTDIGITAL > Configuration and find the heading Abandoned Carts.
Expand the Abandoned Cart Limit drop-down menu and choose the amount of time you want to elapse before another abandoned cart email is allowed to be sent to a contact.
Select Save Config in the top right. A message appears to confirm that the settings have been saved. Your abandoned cart emails will send accordingly.
Send abandoned cart emails only to newsletter subscribers
You can restrict abandoned cart emails so that they are only sent to newsletter subscribers.
To send abandoned cart emails only to newsletter subscribers:
Go to Stores > Configuration > DOTDIGITAL > Configuration and find the heading Abandoned Carts.
Expand the Allow abandoned cart for non-subscribed contacts drop-down menu and select No.
This will always exclude unsubscribed contacts.
Select Save Config in the top right. A message appears to confirm that the settings have been saved. Your abandoned cart emails will send accordingly.
