Learn how to use Email2SMS and check your reporting.
Overview
You can use Email2SMS to send SMS messages using your email. Most users use Email2SMS for transactional messages. Therefore, it’s a handy way to start using SMS with your email-only software.
Before you start
Things you need to do before you start:
- Review the SMS regulations and requirements for each of the countries you are sending your SMS messages to.
- Enable SMS pay-as-you-go on your Engagement Cloud account or have an available SMS credit balance.
To learn how to set up SMS pay-as-you-go, check out Understand SMS pay-as-you-go and spend limit.
Send Email2SMS
To send Email2SMS:
Step 1: Register for Email2SMS
To register for Email2SMS, contact your account manager or our support team. For security reasons, we require a list of email addresses that you want to send from.
Step 2: Authorise your Email2SMS emails
After we register you for Email2SMS, we send you a one-time code. You must use this code in your email subject line to authorise your Email2SMS communications. Make sure the code is prefixed with ACC=
. For example, your subject line should look like this:
ACC=Your Email2SMS secret code here
orACC=1234
Using additional subject line options and values
You can add additional options and values to the subject line of your email message. You must format the subject line option and value as Option=Value
:
Option | Value | More info |
---|---|---|
ACC |
Insert your Email2SMS secret code. |
This option and value is required. Your email message is ignored if this isn't included in your email subject line.
|
COUNTRYCODE |
Insert a two-character country code. | Add this option and value if you are using a locally formatted phone number in your To email address. For example, GB for Great Britain.
|
ORIGINATOR |
Insert any of the registered phone numbers, short codes, or company names that are registered in your Engagement Cloud account. | This option and value is optional. If you don't specify an originator, the default From originator is used. |
For multiple options and values, separate them with a number sign (#
). For example, ACC=1234#COUNTRYCODE=GB#ORIGINATOR=ACME
.
Step 3: Address your email to send an SMS message
Email2SMS uses an email address to specify the phone number to send the SMS message to. For example: phonenumber@r1-email2sms.dotdigital.com.
The phone number can be in international or local format. For example,
447123123123
is international format for the UK. If you use a local format, you must specify the country code using theCOUNTRYCODE
option and value. For example, Great Britain is GB.For more information about two-character country codes, check out List of ISO 3166 country codes.
Step 4: Create your message
Enter the message you want to send in the body of your email. End your message with #end#
to prevent any email footers from showing in the SMS message.
